Midwestern Colleges that Offer the Most Student Loan Assistance

March 29, 2019

Most every college and university in the United States provides need-based financial aid to students.  However, need-based financial aid can take several different forms, including grants, scholarships, work-study positions, and student loans.  While incurring student debt is the least desirable way to finance a college education, for many students taking on debt is unavoidable nonetheless.  As such, it is important for students and families to know which schools typically provide the most and least financial assistance in the form of student loans.

The tables below present the colleges in the Midwest that offer the most financial aid to students in the form of loans.  The first table presents the top ten schools by average student loan assistance in absolute dollars. The second table lists the top ten schools based on average student loan assistance as a percentage of the cost of attendance.  When considering the data herein, it is important to recognize that some schools offer greater student loan assistance in terms of absolute dollars, while others offer loans of lesser dollar values that nonetheless constitute a greater percentage of the school’s cost of attendance.

The data for these tables was sourced from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a federal government-sponsored national database of higher education institutions, for the 2017-18 school year.  The underlying loans on which the data is based include subsidized and unsubsidized loans issued to incoming freshmen, but exclude PLUS loans issued to parents.
